Qualify the application before the purchase
Characterize the actual sludge blend and equipment. Biological sludge, chemically precipitated solids and mixed feeds do not necessarily share a preferred charge profile. A visually strong floc may still break during transfer or produce an unacceptable separator result.
Specify the proposed product code and supplied form. Request the technical sheet and handling instructions for that code, and confirm whether the sample is representative of the material proposed for commercial supply. A family name alone cannot define an acceptable shipment.
Measure the result that matters
Compare prepared samples across a stated dose range. Record drainage and capture together, then check the candidate on the intended belt press, screw press or centrifuge. Treat changes in feed solids and upstream chemistry as part of the trial record, not as background noise.
Useful acceptance endpoints include: filtrate or centrate quality, throughput and cake handling. Agree how each endpoint is measured and retain the untreated or current-product comparison. The application screening routes connect the product enquiry to the treatment duty.
Screen charge against the sludge blend
Identify whether the feed is biological, chemically precipitated or a changing blend. Ask for a focused charge-profile comparison rather than selecting the highest cationicity by default. Keep the sludge condition and preparation method consistent while the candidates are ranked.
Observe drainage or capture across a stated dose range. A narrow apparent optimum deserves attention during plant approval because real feed variation may move the process outside that window. Record both favorable results and the dose at which liquid quality or handling deteriorates.
Approve on the intended dewatering equipment
For a belt press, inspect drainage, belt release and filtrate quality. For a centrifuge, keep throughput and operating settings in the record alongside centrate and cake results. A beaker comparison cannot establish the effect of every transfer pump or separator setting.
Normalize consumption to a clearly stated basis, such as commercial product per tonne of dry solids. Confirm the dry-solids measurement and actual delivered polymer quantity; changes in wet-sludge volume alone can make an apparent dose saving misleading.
Keep the approved conditioning recipe traceable
Request the preparation instructions for the proposed CPAM form. Check the available stock capacity and maturation time at peak sludge demand. Record dilution and injection conditions as part of approval, not merely the product name.
The purchase record should connect charge-selection evidence, the proposed code and the release specification. Before accepting a replacement, decide whether its preparation or conditioning behavior requires another equipment trial. A matching ionic label does not by itself establish equivalence.
